My husband made an honest mistake on our taxes one year. We short paid by $98. We actually thought we had paid our full tax burden.
Two years later they came after us for penalties and interest. It took a few months to straighten it out. We paid a little over $700 to the IRS for an HONEST mistake of $98.
A year later another agent came to us. This agent tried to collect another $700. He said that even though it was a joint return and my husband had paid what was due and signed the paperwork, I hadn't signed it. Therefore I still owed the bill and needed to pay another $700. I kid you not! I was pregnant and under Dr. orders to avoid stress. I told him he had to deal with my husband and why. Yet he continued to call the house and harrass ME until I threatened to file charges against him.
It took multiple phone calls by my husband and finally another trip to the federal courthouse to straighten this one out.
THEN when we sold our house TWO YEARS LATER, turns out that a THIRD agent filed a personal lien against me for back taxes in the amount that we had already PAID from an HONEST mistake.
I got hold of a supervisor from the IRS. Wonderful woman! She said this was verging on harassment (ya THINK?!). She faxed a statement to my husband stating that the lien was filed in error. Then she removed it from my credit report.
In all, we paid about SEVEN TIMES what we failed to pay them through a mistake and spent countless hours over four years clearing it up.
Now if we had to go through all of that BS for a true $98 "hiccup," WTH should Geithner get to be Secretary of Treasure after not paying $34,000?!
Tell you what. If he pays 7x's that in penalties and interest, $238,000, I'll let it go.

Seeing I owe this year, I think I will skip on filing altogether and claim the sixteenth amendment.
Last year, I missed a very very fine print line on my return and, in the midst of trying to figure out taxes for the FOUR DIFFERENT STATES I called home, missed about $200 to MA. When I got the notice, I called them to clear it up. The man kept saying "well, you were trying to..." I finally said "I wasn't *trying* to do a **** thing. If I'd been *trying* I wouldn't have called you back immediately." He transferred me to his supervisor. rofl
LOL! Seriously, these people have way too much power and need to be shut down!!!
Might want to check and see if they filed a personal lien against you...**grins**
