Time to Call Hazmet to my Home

Why do I have a picture of a burned out CFL (compact flourescent)?

Excellent question!

Well, that's one of the lights over my desk. I replaced an old style bulb with this compact fluorescent, before I knew how bad they were, in order to save money and the nuisance of changing bulbs every six months.
Here's the funny thing ... I just put it in a few months ago. The funnier thing is that I have two of these overhead lights. The other one, with an old style bulb, is still working. And It's older.
So now is my dilemma ...
WHAT TO DO WITH THIS COMPACT FLUORESCENT?
This didn't use to be a problem for me until one of Joe's posts informed me of how dangerous it is to change a CFL.
Holy Cow! IT MIGHT BREAK!!!

The following guidelines comes from this page put out by the U.S. EPA. It's how to properly dispose of a CFL and what to do if a CFL break. YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!!! Evidently, I'm suppose to find a special receiving site for my burned out CFL. And I'm not so sure I should be changing this bulb in the first place, given I'm 28 weeks pregnant. Even if you don't read it, just scroll down over it to get an idea of how involved this is! I think I should call hazmet out now just to be safe!
Fluorescent light bulbs contain a very small amount of mercury sealed within the glass tubing. EPA recommends the following clean-up and disposal below. Please also read the information on this page about what Never to Do After a Mercury Spill.
Before Clean-up: Air Out the Room
* Have people and pets leave the room, and don't let anyone walk through the breakage area on their way out.
* Open a window and leave the room for 15 minutes or more.
* Shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system, if you have one.
Clean-Up Steps for Hard Surfaces
* Carefully scoop up glass pieces and powder using stiff paper or cardboard and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
* Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
* Wipe the area clean with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place towels in the glass jar or plastic bag.
* Do not use a vacuum or broom to clean up the broken bulb on hard surfaces.
Clean-up Steps for Carpeting or Rug
* Carefully pick up glass fragments and place them in a glass jar with metal lid (such as a canning jar) or in a sealed plastic bag.
* Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder.
* If vacuuming is needed after all visible materials are removed, vacuum the area where the bulb was broken.
* Remove the vacuum bag (or empty and wipe the canister), and put the bag or vacuum debris in a sealed plastic bag.
Clean-up Steps for Clothing, Bedding and Other Soft Materials
* If clothing or bedding materials come in direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from inside the bulb that may stick to the fabric, the clothing or bedding should be thrown away. Do not wash such clothing or bedding because mercury fragments in the clothing may contaminate the machine and/or pollute sewage.
* You can, however, wash clothing or other materials that have been exposed to the mercury vapor from a broken CFL, such as the clothing you are wearing when you cleaned up the broken CFL, as long as that clothing has not come into direct contact with the materials from the broken bulb.
* If shoes come into direct contact with broken glass or mercury-containing powder from the bulb, wipe them off with damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes. Place the towels or wipes in a glass jar or plastic bag for disposal.
Disposal of Clean-up Materials
* Immediately place all clean-up materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area for the next normal trash pickup.
* Wash your hands after disposing of the jars or plastic bags containing clean-up materials.
* Check with your local or state government about disposal requirements in your specific area. Some states do not allow such trash disposal. Instead, they require that broken and unbroken mercury-containing bulbs be taken to a local recycling center.
Future Cleaning of Carpeting or Rug: Air Out the Room During and After Vacuuming
* The next several times you vacuum, shut off the central forced-air heating/air conditioning system and open a window before vacuuming.
* Keep the central heating/air conditioning system shut off and the window open for at least 15 minutes after vacuuming is completed.

Barred ... for Opposing Global Warming

The article is really about this picture which is used by global warming "experts" to "prove" the plight of the polar bear and decry global warming.
I read the entire article, which was pretty boring in truth, but found the following pretty interesting:

A meeting of polar bear experts in Copenhagen this week put renewed focus on the message of the photo.

Canadian biologist Mitchell Taylor reportedly was barred from the conference because he doesn't subscribe to the conventional view of global warming. He contends that Arctic warming is caused by nature, not humans, and polar bears aren't at risk.

I decided to do a little research on Polar Bears and Mitchell Taylor...

* I found that 70% of the polar bear population is in North America (that would be mainly Alaska and Canada)

* It is normal for them to be found swimming hundreds of miles from land (they've always floated on ice caps)

* DR. Mitchell Taylor has been "researching the status and management of polar bears in Canada and around the Arctic Circle for 30 years..." And he says that of the 19 populations "almost all are increasing or at optimum levels, only two have for local reasons modestly declined." (UK Telegraph)

* Dr. Taylor also states that yes, there has been Arctic warming, but it's because of warm water currents from the Pacific and winds blowing in from the Bering Sea. (UK Telegraph)

* Dr. Taylor is one of OVER 31,000 SCIENTISTS, including OVER 9,000 PhD's, that say global warming is a farce. Petition and list names.

So, what say you?

The Additional Cost of Blubber

For all those people out there upset at the American consumption of gasoline...
Twenty-Five Things You Probably Didn't Know About Your Body and Health

6. Obese people spend approximately $485 more on clothing, $828 on extra plane seats, and $36 more on gas each year than their thinner counterparts. Researchers say an overweight driver burns about 18 additional gallons of gas a year. Plus-sized clothing costs 10 percent to 15 percent more than smaller-sized clothes. When it comes to jet fuel, a recent issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine estimated that the extra weight of obese Americans caused airlines to spend $275 million to burn 350 million more gallons of fuel.

Next thing we know, there'll be a fat tax to punish those with extra blubber burning more fossil fuels and pouring extra pollution into the air. We'll have to have our BMI's verified by a medical doctor and then taxed accordingly. The U.S. Government will use it to pay for research and development of alternative fuel. It's be like the additional cigarette tax paying for medical care for children...

Sure am glad I worked out this morning.

Peace Out,

About Global Warming...Cooling...

I wrote the following in response to a comment made at Brooke's blog. I wanted to post it here for those of you who may not read it otherwise.

"That's akin to saying a single human with a chain gun wouldn't be able to have any influence on an elephant if it fired round after round at its hide."

If the elephant weighed 6,768,838,943,539,200,000,000 tons and was as big as the earth, a single man with a chain gun WOULDN'T have much of an effect on the elephant at all.

"the fragility of the Earth's ecology and climate system have nothing to do with its hefty size, and as a collective race we CAN have a huge impact on its overall well being."

So now we're from ONE guy shooting an elephant to an entire race. Hey, I'm not saying we can't have some environmental impact. What I AM saying is that global cooling and warming has been going for much longer than the scientist say man has been on earth to cause it. That is an absolutely indisputable FACT.

Now there ARE environmental impacts we need to address. But when a bunch of "iiiiintelleeeectuals" start saying things that are completely and TOTAL asinine, they loose all credibility when it comes to the issues we ARE responsible for...like people who dump their old oil and paint into drainage that lead out to fresh water supplies.

Blaming mankind for the NATURAL NORMAL AND HISTORICAL cyclical climate changes that the earth has been going through for MILLIONS of years, according to scientists, is asinine. It's outright STUPID. In fact, I have a bridge I'd like to sell All Bore.

And by the way, a SINGLE VOLCANO emits more carbon dioxide into the air in a single day than humans have since we've been on this planet. I'm sure there is a reason for that. And then, of course, there are the results of volcanic eruptions, like Tambora, Pinatubo, Vesuvius, Mt. St. Helens, just to name a few, that have happened in recent world history. Check out how THEY affected temperatures and for how long.

Get into ancient history and research Toba (72,000 BC) and the massive global cooling and loss of life it caused. And look at other super volcano eruptions (Yellowstone is an interesting one to investigate).

When you're done researching about how volcanoes affect our oh so fragile ecology, start looking into supernova shockwaves.

I'm not even a scientist and I know these FACTS. And I also know that Mother Earth is NOT as fragile as some asshats would like everyone to believe.

Anyone who thinks that man has that much control over the climate and natural cycles of our planet has a real ego issue.

In the grand scheme of things, we're like sugar ants trying to move a Mac truck. Short of all out nuclear war, we're pretty much at the mercy of the earth's own powerful forces, which laugh at the "magnitude" of our little bombs. More over, even if we did have all out nuclear war, the earth would clean itself over time. We just wouldn’t be here to witness it.
