Anyone who has been here for any amount of time knows how much emailed urban legands piss me off. It pisses me off that people are too damned lazy to take MAYBE an entire THIRTY SECONDS to verify information before passing a LIE along.
So today I received an email from my MIL about the University of Kentucky removing the holocaust from it's curriculum because it upset Muslim students. In less than thirty seconds I checked it out at Snopes.com. Of course it's not true.
But see, now I'm upset because (a) I've asked her and a few others SEVERAL times to VERIFY at Snopes, and yet, here we go again and (b) we are U of K fans and I have a child who plans on attending there.
So I wrote the following email. Please tell me if it's too harsh:
Mother-in-Law,
Please read the following and forward it on to the person who sent you this and anyone else you may have forwarded it onto. This seriously upset me. It took thirty seconds for me to check it out at Snopes.com. White Boy has his heart set on U of K as does Happy Gilmore. Princess is already a big U of K fan. I mean, if someone had sent you the same lie about Your State [she's a huge fan of another U and has been for years], wouldn't it have upset you too? U of K is an outstanding school. Someone with a problem thought it would be fun or funny to slander them.
It isn't funny. This type of lie can cause all sorts of problems for the school and its students. So please, just copy and paste the following and send it out.
Thank-you,
Krystal
The story regarding the University of Kentucky taking the holocaust out if's curriculum is totally false!!! Please, if you've sent this to anyone, email them it IS NOT TRUE! This story started regarding schools in the UK. Someone then changed it to the University of Kentucky. Read this (http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/holocaust.asp ) and also the press release from the University of Kentucky here (http://news.uky.edu/news/display_article.php?category=1&artid=2873&type=1)
"The academic administration of the University of Kentucky would never permit such a grotesque lapse in its commitment to the principle of academic freedom. Let us bury this rumor. It is a distortion of the realities on and off campus," said UK Assistant Provost Richard B. Greissman.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE forward the TRUTH to the person who sent it to you and anyone else you may have forwarded it onto. The University of Kentucky is an outstanding school and has NOT done this!!! The school and those who attend do not deserve to be the subject of such a horrible lie. Nor do they deserve to be the subject of such ridiculous rumors.
Snopes.com (http://www.snopes.com) is an excellent place to verify information before passing it on. It only takes a few seconds and prevents harming innocent people.
Thank-you,
The mother of several future University of Kentucky students
So, what do you think?

It should be mandatory that all forwarded e-mails be checked by Snopes. If you have the kind of relationship with your MIL (where you can say things like this) I would totally send it.
It doesn't sound harsh to me. Not at all.
Oh, and I feel your pain on folks forwarding unconfirmed info. At my former job, my manager sent a blanket email to her employees about cellphones sparking explosions at gas stations. I knew the story was bullshit, but I checked snopes anyway for confirmation, then sent it to her.
Imagine a BOSS sending unconfirmed bullcrap to her employees. I lost a great deal of respect for her that day. One of many reasons why I finally moved on
(Oh... and as a matter of common sense, folks shouldn't be on cellphones while pumping gas amyway. That's a good way of getting "got" by the local stickup man.)
I've been fact checking at Snopes for 5 years now. I also pass the link along to others when they ASK ME to verify things.
No, I don't think you were harsh at all.
Why don't they just verify it themselves?!
That would be too much effort...I guess.
